Is the Christ Child Relevant at Christmas?

It’s Christmas afternoon again. The presents have been unwrapped and the paper stuffed in bags. The scent of pine cones dances in the air and the fragrance of ginger still linger in the kitchen. I heard the jingle of bells at the Salvations Army bucket as a volunteer shook the clapper in rhythm to the carols he sang. But, this year I heard, “Merry Christmas” fewer times than in the past.

Is Christmas even relevant in our sophisticated, intellectual approach to the holidays? Some will debate if Jesus was actually born in December, or whether shepherds were in the fields during that month and, there are those who say there could not have been a star so bright that wise men from the East would have followed it. I’ve heard all the arguments and probably, you have too. The real issue is, “Was the Son of God born and did his presence change the world?” Is Jesus relevant or should we grow up and stop believing in manger beds and singing angels?

If you need proof that “Jesus matters,” look around the world at countries that did not receive him. Does Love rule their day? I think not. Women are killed for wanting an education. Those with opposing opinions are beheaded. Political opponents are jailed. Crops, like cocoa and coffee, are harvested by slave labor, many of them very young. Children are slaughtered for not denouncing Christ, while we here in our “free country” are intimidated into not saying “Merry Christmas.” Pay attention to societies where Jesus is not welcome, where he never had the chance to usher in a life of love, justice, peace, joy, forgiveness, and the promise of Salvation. Now, you tell me . . .  is Jesus relevant anymore? Or, is he needed now even more than before?

Let me take the privilege of wishing you and those you love and hold dear, a very Merry Christmas, the rest of the day and throughout the upcoming year! Claim Christmas in your heart and carry it with you as we enjoy another year of Love.

Blessings,
Doris

Once Again Believe

Christmas was born in the hearts of those who love, thousands of years ago. Yet, the story continues to be told to this very day. There are those who want to silence the words of Jesus and wipe out the season of Christmas. In my book, Length of Days - The Age of Silence, this holiday has been reduced to a celebration of "things." It is called Gifting Day.

Is tomorrow Gifting Day in your home, or the birthday of the Son of God? It all comes down to: What do you believe? Is He present in your life?

Find ways to speak the name of Jesus with the gifts you give tomorrow. We sent Stuffies to granddaughters in Ohio two years ago, so this year we caught up to the four granddaughters here in Indiana. Along with their various animals, we purchased the zippered heart for each of them as well. Last Sunday, when we celebrated our family Christmas, we gave each of the little girls a baby in the manger figurine, to place inside the heart and stuff it deep inside their animal. "We put the baby Jesus in our heart at Christmas time," I told each of them.

Who or what is in your heart this Christmas? What teachings and traditions are you passing on to your family? Speak the name of Jesus and read the old, old story to those you love. For when the blight of winter comes, as it comes to everyone at some point in their life, they will have the warm, blessed image of the day they placed Jesus in the heart of Christmas, and they will feel Christmas love and hope again.

May your ears hear songs that put Christ in your heart this Christmas Eve; your eyes see glorious wonders of light and hope; and may you feel the brush of angel wings and once again, believe!

Shopping is That SImple

Okay, it's simple. I wanted to get a book for our son but ran out of time for shipping to get it here before Sunday - for our family Christmas Party. Last minute planning tends to change one's plans.
So --- I went on Amazon today, found the book in eBook format, copied the cover-art and printed it off for giving as a gift. I will buy the eBook Sunday morning "As a Gift," enter our son's email address and it will appear in his email in-box. Snap - shopping done.

Any of my books, all covers with titles are pictured in the right side-bar of this blog, can be purchased as an eBook. The eBook will appear in your friend or family's email in-box immediately. No my friend, it is not too late for gifts to arrive on time - just send them electronically!

Have a Merry Christmas and be sure to wish people you meet a Christmas blessing. In 2112, During the Age of Silence, Christiana lives in a time when Christmas is banned, only Gifting Day remains. Speak the love of Christmas every day - as often as you can, as joyfully as you can, for ever as long as you can - so the name of Christmas does not vanish from our society.

Christmas Wishes

We all have to reign in our spending at Christmas time, in spite of the long list of Christmas Wishes. Oh, sorry, maybe that's only me! There are issues we all consider:

-  our bank balance
-  the number of people for whom we buy presents
-  Is a Happy Peppy Doll or a Might Mega Truck a true representation of the gift God gave us all?

In my picture book, Lincoln's Christmas Mouse, the Civil War had been raging, leaving many shortages in resources. President Lincoln doesn't think it would be right to put up a Christmas Tree in the White House and waste valuable wood needd elsewhere in the battle. Hiram Antwhistle, the Christmas Mouse, comes up with a plan to use the tree trunk after the holidays.

Read it! Both you and your children will love it!

I pray that these Christmas Wishes are fulfilled:

-  those for good health
-  those for safety for your family
-  peace around the world
-  the year when the Jesus, Christmas Child comes to everyone around the world.

In my book, Length of Days - The Age of Silence, which takes place in 2112, Christmas has been banned for the previous one hundred years. They celebrate Gifting Day. Will that finally happen in our time?

Please say to all you meet: "Merry Christmas!" as often as you can, as joyously as you can . . . for as long as you can.

Merry Christmas my friends!

Do Writers Experience Christmas Differently?

Do you think writers experience Christmas differently? If you think that may be true, why would that be? As a psychologist and novelist/author, I both agree and disagree. Does that sound a little non-committal? Let me explain.

For many of us, large celebrations, like the Christmas Holidays, began in our experience when we were very young – before we had language. We just breathed in the essence of Love, Expectation and Joy. As the years went along, we continued to attach those great feelings with Christmas, and added the aroma of pine and Christmas cookies, the sounds of carolers in song, the silky touch of satin ribbons wound around boxes covered in festive paper, and the taste of cocoa overflowing with whipped cream and marshmallows. While our experiences are similar, writers ascribe words to our feelings and share them with readers.

In all your busy Christmas shopping, parties, and family, I have another fun activity for you. Go to a thesaurus, either online or in book form, and find three words that best expresses your “feelings” of Christmas. Next year, add three more words to your list of Christmas experiences, expressed in words.

As you find a little time for reading during the holidays, watch for the words that other authors use that express your deep, non-verbal feelings. What fun! - finding a voice for your experiences!

The collection of short Christmas stories, titled, Christmases Past, gives you the opportunity to “hear” and experience Christmas through the different, but similar, words of eight separate authors. You will find many more books as well as your browse through the bookstore, library and online. Hey, I know you’re busy, but if you don’t take time for the “words” of Christmas, you will miss out on the fullest expression of the Celebration of Joy, when Love, Song and acceptance came into the world.

Finding our Christmas voice is why Christmas carols are so precious – someone has found the “words” to help you express your “feelings” of Christmas. Two of the most important words are, “Merry Christmas,” and those are the words I have saved for you, Dear Reader. Merry Christmas!
